Your Path to Pain Relief
What Is TMJ Disorder?
Your temporomandibular joints (TMJ) connect your lower jaw to your skull. When the joints or the muscles around them are strained, you can feel it as jaw pain, headaches, earaches or neck pain. Clenching and grinding, stress and bite problems are common causes.
Signs You May Have TMJ or Myofascial Pain
- Jaw pain or tenderness, especially in the morning
- Clicking, popping or locking when you open your mouth
- Frequent headaches or migraines, often at the temples
- Ear pain or fullness without an ear infection
- Worn, chipped or sensitive teeth from grinding
How We Treat TMJ and Facial Pain
Every plan starts with a thorough TMJ evaluation to find what's actually causing your pain. Depending on the cause, treatment may include:
- Trigger point therapy to release tight, painful muscle knots that refer pain to the jaw and head
- Botox for TMJ and migraines to relax overworked jaw muscles
- Custom night guards and splints to protect your teeth and take pressure off the joint
- Myofascial pain treatment for the muscles of the face, jaw and neck
All of this happens in our Tumwater office.
TMJ FAQ
Can a dentist treat TMJ?
Yes. Because TMJ involves your bite, teeth and jaw muscles, dentists are often the right place to start.
Does Botox help TMJ?
For many people, yes. It relaxes the muscles that clench and grind, which can ease jaw pain and tension headaches.
Will a night guard stop my jaw pain?
A custom night guard protects your teeth and can reduce strain on the joint. It works best as part of a full treatment plan.
Is TMJ treatment covered by insurance?
It depends on your plan. Some medical or dental plans cover part of it. We'll help you check.
