Is the Dyson Toothbrush Worth It? A Dentist's Honest Answer

Dyson's $499 CameraJet toothbrush uses a camera and a mouthwash jet to clean between your teeth. Here's a dentist's take on how it works, whether it replaces flossing, and whether it's worth the money.

The short answer: The Dyson CameraJet is an interesting idea, but no toothbrush is worth $500 unless you'll use it twice a day, every day. A $3 manual brush, used carefully for two minutes, prevents cavities very well. If the CameraJet's features would get you to brush longer or clean between your teeth when you otherwise wouldn't, it might be worth it for you. If not, your money is better spent elsewhere.

What Is the Dyson CameraJet Toothbrush?

The CameraJet is Dyson's first toothbrush, released in September 2026. It combines a powered brush with a built-in camera that looks for the gaps between your teeth while you brush.

How Does the Dyson Toothbrush Work?

  • Camera with LED lighting: spots the gaps between your teeth as you brush.
  • Targeted mouthwash jet: when the camera finds a gap, the brush sprays a cone of mouthwash between those teeth from a small built-in reservoir.
  • Powered motor: vibrates at up to 58,000 movements per minute.
  • Companion app: the MyDyson app has how-to videos and a live view from inside your mouth.

How Much Does the Dyson Toothbrush Cost?

It launched at $499.99 in the US. That's several times the cost of most high-end electric toothbrushes.

Does the Dyson Toothbrush Replace Flossing?

Not yet, as far as we know. Dyson describes the jet as a kind of automatic flossing, and it built the CameraJet because so few people floss. We haven't seen independent clinical research showing that it cleans between teeth as well as floss or interdental brushes. Until that research exists, keep cleaning between your teeth every day.

Is an Electric Toothbrush Better Than a Manual One?

Slightly, on average, but technique matters more. A large Cochrane review of 56 studies found that powered toothbrushes remove somewhat more plaque than manual brushes over time. The same research shows that manual brushing works very well when it's done properly. The best toothbrush is the one you use consistently and carefully.

Is the Dyson Toothbrush Worth It? Our Take

We're excited about any technology that could help prevent tooth decay and gum disease. Cleaning between teeth is the step most people skip, and that's where many cavities and gum problems start. A brush that makes it easier is worth watching.

It may be worth considering if:

  • You know you won't floss, and you'd use the jet every day
  • Gadgets and feedback keep you motivated to brush longer
  • The price isn't a stretch for your budget

It's probably not worth it if:

  • You already brush and floss well with simpler tools
  • You'd rather spend the money on regular cleanings and checkups, which do more to protect your teeth than any brush

What Matters More Than Your Toothbrush

  • Brush twice a day for two minutes with a fluoride toothpaste.
  • Angle the bristles toward the gumline at about 45 degrees and use gentle, short strokes. Pressing hard doesn't clean better and can wear down gums.
  • Don't skip the back teeth or the inside surfaces. Those are the spots most often missed.
  • Clean between your teeth every day, with floss, interdental brushes or a water flosser, whichever you'll actually use.
  • Replace your brush or brush head every three months, or sooner if the bristles are splayed.
